Phase 2

Children will be taught these sounds, grouped into sets. Children are encouraged to begin blending these sounds straight away. After working only on set 1 children can begin to make words e.g. sat, at. pat. At this stage double consonants are taught to show children that sometimes more than one letter can make a single sound. At this stage, the double consonant makes the same sound as the single letter e.g. 'f' 'ff'. In stage 3 children learn that this is not always the case.
